We give a professional caring service so all dogs in our care are treated with patience and kindness. We specialise in nervous dogs , taking time to gain their confidence and also in dogs who really do not like being groomed. We encourage owners to start bringing puppies as soon as they have had there vaccinations, even if it is just to sit in the workshop for an hour to get used to us and the surroundings, including the sound of clippers and dryers. The first visit to a grooming salon must be a happy one ,so that future visits hold no fear and as the pups grow into adults they are still happy to come into our workshop to be trimmed or groomed. We like to have dogs for severel hours so they can relax in front of the heater after the bath and rest before we do the finshing touches to the coat. Before the bath the dogs are groomed and the excess coat taken off if appropiate.

At J & J's we will trim, hand strip or groom your dog to breed standards or to your requirements. We are Vet recommended and will give special shampoos to any animal that needs it.

We cut nails, express anal glands and clean ears.

Benefits of having your dog groomed

This picture shows a matted coat removed from an Old English Sheepdog.

A good groom acts as a massage for your dog and removes dead skin cells. It can improve circulation and encourage good hair growth and a healthy shiney coat.

As we go over your dog we will check for lumps that can be missed under a heavy coat. We check the ears and eyes, cleaning them if necessary. In the summer months grass seeds can become embedded in a hairy foot so having the hair trimmed away from the feet can make checking the feet after a walk easier. In the winter, apart from making a muddy mess all over the floor! hairy feet will stay damp for much longer , which can cause soreness.

Winter trimming is recommended for dogs who live in doors , imagine sitting in a centrally heated house with a coat on ! Hairy dogs stay wet for longer which could cause arthitic conditions in later life.

A dog with a matted coat is an uncomfortable one. They are too hot in the house, cannot scratch themselves if they have an itch and never dry out if they get wet. Clipping the coat off will give the dog a new lease of life and make it much more pleasent to cuddle.
